A MESSAGE FROM
PRESIDENT CAROLANN BIEDERMAN
Aloha mai kākou,
Tuesday’s meeting was buzzing with energy thanks to a fantastic turnout by visiting Rotarians, guests, current and prospective members. Kent Reinker offered a lighthearted welcome to our guest speaker Ed Sniffen, Director of the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation. Club members sang along with Kent and his banjo for “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad” and finished up with “Happy Birthday” to Jake Jacobs, Phil Wright and the nine other October birthday celebrants. Lucci Pinoliad brought our Club recognition gift back from the Cebu YMCA, a treasured partner for so many of our Philippines service projects.
The celebration continued with Cypress Navarro-Acio’s induction as our newest Rotarian. Cypress is also a new member of the Don Anderson Youth Leadership Fellows cohort. He is well on his way to a career as a fire fighter. Mahalo to sponsors Jim Harrow and Paul Saito for introducing Cypress to our Rotary ‘ohana. We are excited to welcome Cypress as he shares his unique skills and talents in the spirit of Service Above Self.
We were fortunate to hear Ed Sniffen’s perspective about the fine balance and trade-offs that must be considered in the pursuit of energy efficiency, and to ask serious questions about our interconnected future. The Department of Transportation is tasked with operating the State’s vital infrastructure in
a complex environment and Ed's presentation was truly insightful.
Thank you, Clif Purkiser and Gigi Davidson, for leading the recent Community Service survey
effort. Club members, mahalo for freely sharing your feedback. The results are available here.
Do you know a corporate executive who would be a great fit for our club? If so, Membership Director Bridget Townsend wants to hear from you. Our new Corporate Membership program is designed for business leaders plus two of their designated staff members. To kick off the program, we are hosting a "Rotary Means Business" event on Thursday evening, October 29 at The Pacific Club. Invitations are available now for interested business leaders and their Club member sponsors. Please reach out to Bridget, Wesley Yamamoto, Brian Dunkel or me to secure an invitation or to share a referral to help grow our club’s membership.
Next week’s meeting is on Thursday, October 15. This Pau Hana in the Park is an exclusive opportunity to tour Centennial Park Waikīkī and enjoy sunset, pupu, drinks, fellowship and a park update by Rob Hale in the Penthouse Suite at the Courtyard by Marriott opposite the park. Choose the tour only or tour and reception. Pre-registration online is essential. Sign up by October 12.
We’re back at The Pacific Club on Tuesday, October 20 for a very special Rotary Treasures program that recognizes and celebrates Past President Dave Shanahan’s contributions and achievements.
Have a wonderful holiday weekend! I look forward
to seeing you next Thursday at Centennial Park
