Hawaii Community Foundation names Terry George as CEO, Michelle Ka‘uhane as COO - Pacific Business News
The Hawaii Community Foundation on Monday announced that Terry George, who will retire from the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation next month, will succeed Micah Kāne as CEO of the philanthropic organization later this summer, while Michelle Ka‘uhane, its senior vice president and chief impact officer, is promoted to the role of chief operating officer and executive vice president, effective immediately.
George has decades of leadership experience in nonprofits, government and community organizations, including 22 years with the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation, where he has served as president and CEO since 2014. He announced his retirement from the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation earlier this year, and his last day is slated for July 1.
He will start in his new role at HCF on Aug. 1.
“It’s an honor to join an organization that is so integral to the well-being and future of Hawaii,” George said in a statement. “The Hawaii Community Foundation is a powerful connector and catalyst for good, and I look forward to working with Michelle and the entire HCF team to strengthen our collective impact.”
“Terry brings both strategic vision and a deep connection to community,” Ka‘uhane said in a statement. “I look forward to working alongside him to build upon HCF’s strong legacy of community empowerment and donor stewardship, in close collaboration with our dedicated team and partners.”
HCF is a philanthropic organization that supports a range of initiatives throughout the state, including those that address issues such as housing, education, disaster response, the environment and more. In 2024, it stewarded more than 1,160 funds and distributed over $172 million in grants to the community.
George was selected by the HCF Board of Governors, “who sought a leader with both vision and local insight.”
“Terry comes to HCF with proven leadership, integrity, and a lifelong commitment to Hawaii’s communities,” said Peter Ho, chair of the HCF Board of Governors, in a statement. “He understands how foundations can work hand in hand with local partners to deliver results. Michelle Ka‘uhane has been an essential force within HCF, and, together, this duo positions us for even greater impact moving forward.”
