A MESSAGE FROM
PRESIDENT CAROLANN BIEDERMAN
Aloha mai kākou,
“A constellation of stars” is how Dave Shanahan reflected on his inspirational Rotary mentors during Tuesday’s meeting, when more than 50 members and guests gathered to celebrate Dave as our Club’s 22nd “Rotary Treasure.” The honor is unique to our Club and represents the highest recognition given to a truly accomplished “senior” Club member. Mahalo to Don Anderson for organizing the program, Lee LaBrash for the marvelous slideshow, and to Linda Coble, Nancy Pace, Jim Harrow, Lucci Pinoliad, Nancy Youngren and Rich Proctor for their limericks, humor and heartfelt stories of serving, working and traveling alongside Dave during his past 20 years of Rotary service.
The Shanahan clan – Sue, Shelly, Mary and Sam, Meaghan and Noah – had front row seats, including baby Lily, quietly attending her very first Rotary Club meeting. It was wonderful to welcome back Bob and Sue Robinson, Jessica Lani Rich, Michelle Dolan, and former member Tracey Wiltgen.
Peg Jackson’s inspiration honored her late father-in-law, Rev. Chandler Jackson, who led a full and accomplished life while living with polio. Peg encouraged us to raise awareness, take action on World Polio Day, October 24 and support Polio Plus, Rotary’s promise to the children of the world, so that no one anywhere will again suffer the devastating effects of polio.
Last Tuesday, our Board of Directors formally approved the Sister Club request from the Fukuoka Heisei Friendship Club, a relationship that began in 2019. Save the dates, November 16 – 20, for cultural exchange opportunities to welcome and get acquainted with the Fukuoka members and their spouses. If you speak Japanese, please let us know, as more translators are welcome.
More international news! Our Club’s $3,530 in Global Grant District Designated Funds (DDF) will support the critical need for improved water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities for girls at the Shikharapur Community Campus in Kakshinkali Municipality, kathmandu District, Nepal. Waikiki Rotary is the International Host Club for the “Safe Drinking Water, Happy Girls and Joyful Schools” project, which aims to achieve sustainable, long-term outcomes.
Get ready for three hands-on projects that serve our local community on November 8, 11, and 14. Please register as soon as you can.
We’re back at The Pacific Club on Tuesday, October 27 for Youth Fellow Matthew “JR” Darnell’s induction as the Club’s newest member. Kerri Van Duyne will share highlights from Don Anderson’s national YMCA Hall of Fame recognition, and Bob Sigall, historian, columnist and author, will present a lively program of fascinating histories behind some of his favorite photographs. I look forward to seeing you next Tuesday!
Mahalo nui loa,

Carolann Biederman
