A MESSAGE FROM
PRESIDENT BRIAN DUNKEL

Aloha kakou,

Once again, our Speaker Committee (Nalani Blaisdell-Brennan, Erik Soderholm, Judy Lind, Clif Purkiser, Bob Sumpf, Jessica Lani Rich, and Sam Haas) knocked it out of the park with our speaker, UH Athletic Director Matt Elliott.  Several of you (including Gwen Yamamoto-Lau) have mentioned to me how much you enjoyed the meeting, and I definitely agree.  We also heard from Glen Bailey of the Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunset about a District-wide Veterans’ Day project in which several of us have already volunteered to participate.  Anyone else who wants to participate in that project, please reach out to Lee to get your name on the list.  Finally, we heard that today (Friday) is World Polio Day.  If anyone is interested in attending the District 5000 World Polio Day event, it will begin today (Friday) at 5pm HST on Zoom (Meeting ID: 912 650 8569; Passcode: 658970).  Dr Rachel Burke of the Gates Foundation will be speaking about her work on improving polio vaccines.

In other news, it was decided at our recent Board of Directors meeting that our 110th Anniversary Celebration Gala will be rescheduled, given a number of logistical challenges that have made our original date too tight to allow us to deliver the caliber of event our Club deserves.  Stay tuned for future updates on the rescheduled date.  Also, we received a lovely letter of thanks from the Kyoto RC for our attendance at their celebration, which we will be sharing with the Club as well.  Tom Coyne and Paul Saito were particularly moved by the events with our Sister Clubs, and we will be working to improve the capacity for any of our members to engage with those Clubs and support their members when they visit Honolulu.  Stay tuned for updates on that front as well.

Next week we will be back at the Pacific Club to hear Tyler Gomes, Chief Administrator of Kilohana, the Native Hawaiian Advancement Council, speak to us about tourism and destination management.  As always, pre-registration on Club Runner, or through contacting Lee in advance, is greatly appreciated.  I look forward to seeing many of you on Tuesday, along with any guests or prospective members that you might want to bring with you.  Growing our membership benefits all of us, and everyone can contribute to that important goal.
