A MESSAGE FROM
PRESIDENT BRIAN DUNKEL

Aloha kakou,

This week we heard from Tyler Gomes, Chief Administrator of Kilohana - Native Hawaiian Advancement Council, discussing his role in destination management and how to make tourism work better for all of us who live in Hawaii.  Thanks to Jessica Lani Rich for inviting Tyler to speak with us.  I was happy to see that John Keene had joined us for the first time in a while, although I didn’t have a chance to say hello, along with Jason Ebe, Dawn Marie and Nancy White who do join lunch a bit more regularly.  We had a number of excellent volunteers for our meeting, including Bob Sigall (who took many great photos), Reese Liggett and Ian Wetherell as greeters, Kent Reinker (music), Greg Lui-Kwan (who gave a shout-out to Linda Coble in his inspiration), Bub Wo (pledge) and Michael Marsh (fielding questions with the second microphone).

With today being Halloween, I want to wish everyone a joyous time, whether you are passing out candy, accompanying your grandchildren to collect candy or helping us to pour beer at the “Boos and Brews” Beerfest tonight at the Bishop Museum.  I look forward to seeing many of you there, along with a number of our fellow Rotarians from other clubs on Oahu.  This event is a great opportunity to socialize in a relaxed atmosphere, and we have met a number of folks at previous Beerfests who have gone on to join our Club.  Definitely a “win, win, win” situation.

Remember that next week, we will be at the Oahu Country Club, rather than the Pacific Club, to hear Jean H. Lee, inaugural Presidential Chair of the East-West Center, present five things to watch for when it comes to Korea.  Big thanks to Mitch D’Olier for being our sponsor at this venue.  Unfortunately, if you have not already reserved a lunch, we will not be able to accommodate walk-ins, as it is a plated lunch with selections made in advance.  However, you are still welcome to join us on Zoom.  For those who have not been to the Oahu Country Club, it is in Nuʻuanu Valley with an entrance off of the Pali Highway, near the Queen Emma Summer Palace.  I look forward to seeing many of you there.

We'll also hear from Dr. Porter from the Gates Foundation who will talk about her work on polio surveillance in non-endemic outbreak countries.  We'll get a report on the impact our clubs made with the grant funds from TRF, both locally and internationally.  We'll recognize our new TRF donors and you'll see old friends on Zoom and make new ones, as we unite for good!
