President Joanna Amberger's Message

“When everything seems to be going against you, remember that aircraft take off against the wind, not with it.”

Henry Ford

We have a lot of opportunities coming up to serve the community and build relationships with fellow Rotarians!  Check out the exciting lineup below.  Come join us!
CALL FOR PAUL HARRIS HOSTS
What is a Paul Harris week?

Instead of meeting at the Outrigger, we go into the community to deepen relationships with our fellow Rotarians.  It is a throwback to the founding days of Rotary when meeting locations would rotate each week among the offices of the members.

What is a Paul Harris HOST?

Hosts organize a location for a group of Rotarians to meet.  This is a great opportunity to showcase your office, have an intimate group at your home, introduce people to a nonprofit you support, or get together at an interesting location like a museum or new business in the community. The sky is the limit on where to host!

Hosts can decide if they will provide food or if members will pay their own way.  Sign up to host!  Choose: day, time, location, and if you will provide meals, no meals, or ask for a small fee to cover meals.

When?
The week of May 21st is our upcoming Paul Harris week. Hosts can select any day and time that week.

ROTARY ACTION TEAM PROJECT - MAY 6
Calling all members & friends!

This project begins May 6th and runs through May 25th on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Come in the morning or join in the afternoon or BOTH!

YMCA of Honolulu NEEDS YOU!  The help request is to refurbish residential facilities at the Atkinson Central facility.   YMCA of Honolulu provides housing at low cost and low-barrier to those who are housing insecure, or in need of transitional housing - many are houseless-but-working folks. ATKINSON'S affordable housing fills a critical need for this population.

YOUR help will bring more residential units online so those on a daily waitlist can gain access to the services and get off the street!

- general repair/fix up, painting, housecleaning -
Something for everyone!

Outrigger Canoe Club Parking Update

Beginning May 22, on-site parking will only be available for Outrigger members and their registered cars (decaled), and unfortunately, guest parking will not be an option. At this time, there is not an estimated date on when parking restrictions will be lifted.

To ensure everyone's experience remains smooth and stress-free, it is recommended to explore alternative transportation options and inform any guests accordingly. Options such as Uber, carpooling with other attendees, or parking along nearby streets can help alleviate any potential challenges caused by the limited on-site parking.

Alternate Parking: There is usually ample parking around Kapiolani Park on Kalākaua Avenue at only 25 cents per half hour (coin meters - so bring quarters!) For those who can walk a little further, Jim Harrow alerted us to Paki Avenue on the mauka side of the park that has free parking with no time limit.

Please let President Joanna know if you have mobility issues or need assistance with parking and she will connect you with members who can provide assistance.

Getting to Know - Kandie George
MEMBER SPOTLIGHT BY LINDA COBLE

When Kandie George was a high school teacher in her hometown of Trinidad Tobago, many of her students were in Rotaract…the first she knew of Rotary International.  Kandie, (pronounced ‘candy’) is now a Honolulu Rotarian, and I share my interview with her via the link.

2024.04.30 Hybrid Lunch with Peter Forman
Mahalo Peter Forman for speaking with us!

Mr. Forman was a pleasure to listen to and learn from.  He shared valuable insight about the recent airline merger of Alaska & Hawaiian.  With his background, he feels the merger is a win for everyone.  He gave a great example of a backfired merger when Aloha Air was around and then folded.

Peter loves everything about aviation including the history.  His most recent book is Wings of Paradise: Hawaii's Incomparable Airlines.
Nominate a Rotarian!

The Rotary Club of Honolulu runs on our member volunteers.  We want to acknowledge all the contributions that our members make...big, small, on the stage, behind the scenes, time, treasure, talent.... it all matters!  Tell us who you think makes a difference in our club and why!  The nominations can be for silly or serious awards.  The sky is the limit!
