The Life and Legacy of Queen Lili'uokalani
The Honorable Patrick K.S.L. Yim is a highly respected retired judge who has served our community in many important ways. After retiring from the bench, he has taken on many important roles including as the court appointed fact finder in the Bishop Estate controversy, as board president of IHS, and as a trustee of the Queen Lili'uokalani Trust. Most recently, he has been selected as the Board Chair of the Princess Kawananakoa Foundation which has received $100 million from her estate. He will be discussing her life and legacy.
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards is an intensive leadership experience organized by Rotary clubs and districts where young people can develop leadership skills while having fun and making connections.
Children and Youth Day has created lifetime memories for our keiki, ‘ōpio and families, as well as opportunities for family members to connect with one another and other families. It also serves as a wonderful community resource to educate families about services that are available in our State in a fun-filled and life changing way. Over the years, our event has grown tremendously and has now become one of the largest community celebrations in the State. We anticipate between 5,000-8,000 attendees for 2024.
Children and Youth Day In-Person event takes place on Sunday October 6, 2024 from 10am to 3pm.

“My Life as a Successful Transgender Person in Hawaii.”
In 2006, when Kim Coco Iwamoto was elected to the Board of Education, Hawaii became the first state in the nation to elect an openly transgender person to a statewide office; she was re-elected in 2010 with 25% more votes. Iwamoto went on to serve as a Commissioner on the Hawaii Civil Rights Commission. In 2013, the Obama White House honored her as a Champion of Change. Iwamoto is an attorney, small business owner and Co-Founder of the Chamber of Sustainable Commerce, which now has over 500 members statewide. Iwamoto lives in Kakaako with her 11-year-old daughter Rory, a proud student of Queen Kaahumanu Elementary School.

19th Annual Joint Memorial Service Call to Action Last Weekend in September
Here’s an event we could sure use your help with! This will be our 82nd year honoring our Nisei WWII Veterans. And up until last year, we’ve been short on the help needed to decorate the 2000 graves at Punchbowl. With enough help this is a fun family project. Please come join us and spread the word. Thank you.
Logistics:
Saturday September 28, 2023, 8:30am at Punchbowl. Parking is free and open to the public, except for the reserved spaces on the Mall Drive.
On Saturday, look for the tables, under the tents, with buckets of flowers. Club 100 organizers will assign you to a section, hand you a map, bucket of flowers and flags and off you go, into history, in search of 100th Battalion soldiers. Volunteers are advised to bring sunscreen, a hat, and please stay hydrated. We’ll have water. And no worries, there will be plenty of folks available to help you, so just ask, if needed.
We also need help on
September 30, Monday morning, removing (2000) flags. We’ll start that process at 8:30am.
And on Sunday, September 29 there’s a 9:30am joint memorial service. The service is open to the public. It’s also televised on ‘Ōlelo.
Why September 29th?
The memorial service is held annually on the Sunday September 29 — the day in 1943 that Sgt. Shigeo “Joe” Takata of the 100th Infantry Battalion became the first Japanese American soldier killed in action in World War II. Sgt. Shigeo “Joe” Takata was hit by shrapnel and fought death long enough to point out the location of the enemy, action for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. Sgt. Takata rests in eternal peace at Punchbowl.
