Lessons in Creating a Community Twinkle Borge is the leader of Pu’uhonua O Wai’anae (POW), a village of 250 people living unhoused on state land adjacent to the Waianae Boat Harbor. POW residents serve Waianae in various ways: conducting regular cleanups all across the Waianae Coast, feeding and clothing residents of other houseless encampments, and distributing back-to-school supplies each year to both houseless and housed families. In 2018, Borge and others led an effort to defend the village from eviction. In 2020, Borge and the village completed the purchase of 20 acres in Waianae Valley for their permanent home, and they are now working on construction. Borge is also on the Steering Committee of Hui Aloha.

Today is two-fold: An official visit from our Rotary District Governor, Ted Faigle and our guest speaker Kim Coco Iwamoto “My Life as a Successful Transgender Person in Hawaii.”
In 2006, when Kim Coco Iwamoto was elected to the Board of Education, Hawaii became the first state in the nation to elect an openly transgender person to a statewide office; she was re-elected in 2010 with 25% more votes. Iwamoto went on to serve as a Commissioner on the Hawaii Civil Rights Commission. In 2013, the Obama White House honored her as a Champion of Change. Iwamoto is an attorney, small business owner and Co-Founder of the Chamber of Sustainable Commerce, which now has over 500 members statewide. Iwamoto lives in Kakaako with her 11 year-old daughter Rory, a proud student of Queen Kaahumanu Elementary School. Kim Coco Iwamoto was born on the island of Kauai and is of Japanese descent. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University and a Juris Doctor from the University of New Mexico School of Law. In 2011, Iwamoto completed Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government as a David Bohnett Foundation LGBTQ Victory Institute Leadership Fellow. She won election to the Hawaii Board of Education in 2006, becoming the first out trans person to win state office and one of the first out trans people elected in the United States. Iwamoto served two terms on the board and was appointed to the Hawaii Civil Rights Commission by Governor Neil Abercrombie in 2012. In 2020, Iwamoto lost her race for the Hawaii House of Representatives by just 167 votes. Iwamoto was recognized as a Champion of Change by President Barack Obama in 2013[3] and in 2018, Newsweek listed her as one of fifty need-to-know pioneers for LGBTQ rights.[4 Iwamoto's other work experiences include serving as Managing Attorney at Volunteer Legal Services Hawaii and facilitating affordable housing through AQuA Rentals, LLC (Affordable Quality Apartment Rentals, LLC). Her volunteer work includes serving on the board of directors for both Kūlia Nā Mamo and Hawaiʻi People's Fund.[8]

Don Mangiarelli
Founder of Cyber Security Hawaii
As the owner of cybersecurity-focused IT services company Cyber Security Hawaii, Don Mangiarelli traces his interest in computers back to 1981, when his father brought home an early-model IBM PC as a Christmas gift. But owning a personal computer was a novelty in those days, and the family had trouble setting it up.
“I walk in the door one day and my dad and my sister threw the manual at me,” he recalled with a laugh, “and they were like, ‘you make it work." Mangiarelli has been using that “superpower” ever since, first on a freelance basis fixing people’s computers as a side gig while he worked in construction. Later, he went on to hold IT positions at two local companies — Servco and The Shidler Group.
He launched Cyber Security Hawaii in 2011. A full-service IT company, Cyber Security Hawaii offers risk assessment, security monitoring, systems management and more. In recent years, Mangiarelli said the company’s focus has shifted more toward cybersecurity. That pivot, he said, was in response to the rise of remote work — which he said can make companies more vulnerable to threats — and cybercrime becoming increasingly organized.

CALL TO ACTION 19th Annual Joint Memorial Service Last Weekend in September Here’s an event we could sure use your help with! This will be our 82nd year honoring our Nisei WWII Veterans. And up until last year, we’ve been short on the help needed to decorate the 2000 graves at Punchbowl. With enough help this is a fun family project. Please come join us and spread the word. Thank you. Logistics: Saturday September 28, 2023, 8:30am at Punchbowl. Parking is free and open to the public, except for the reserved spaces on the Mall Drive. On Saturday, look for the tables, under the tents, with buckets of flowers. Club 100 organizers will assign you to a section, hand you a map, bucket of flowers and flags and off you go, into history, in search of 100th Battalion soldiers. Volunteers are advised to bring sunscreen, a hat, and please stay hydrated. We’ll have water. And no worries, there will be plenty of folks available to help you, so just ask, if needed. We also need help on September 30, Monday morning, removing (2000) flags. We’ll start that process at 8:30am. And on Sunday, September 29 there’s a 9:30am joint memorial service. The service is open to the public. It’s also televised on ‘Ōlelo. Why September 29th? The memorial service is held annually on the Sunday September 29 — the day in 1943 that Sgt. Shigeo “Joe” Takata of the 100th Infantry Battalion became the first Japanese American soldier killed in action in World War II. Sgt. Shigeo “Joe” Takata was hit by shrapnel and fought death long enough to point out the location of the enemy, action for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. Sgt. Takata rests in eternal peace at Punchbowl. |

Ulalia Woodside Lee State Director, Hawaii and Palmyra, The Nature Conservancy Climate Resiliency When Ulalia Woodside Lee took the helm as Hawai‘i executive director in 2016, she felt as if she had been preparing for the job her entire life. The daughter of a wildlife biologist and a Hawaiian cultural practitioner, she grew up in a family dedicated to protecting the environment. “Conservation is what we did,” she says. “It’s what I know and what I’ve made my life’s calling.” Lee served as director of natural and cultural resources at Kamehameha Schools, the state’s largest private landowner, prior to coming to TNC. She was also a member of the State Board of Land and Natural Resources, a past commissioner of the Hawai‘i Natural Area Reserve System, and a kumu hula, or teacher of hula, a tradition passed down from her mother at age three. Following graduation from Honolulu’s Punahou School, Lee worked as an intern and later a land agent with the Hawai‘i State Department of Land and Natural Resources, where she gained a broad understanding of land tenure and ownership in Hawai‘i. At the University of Hawai‘i, she earned undergraduate degrees in political science and Hawaiian studies and completed graduate coursework in urban and regional planning, then went to work in the private sector, doing everything from cultural and environmental assessments to masterplan developments. In 2002, she joined Kamehameha Schools Land Assets Division, and during her 14-year tenure there rose to regional director, responsible for a 200,000-acre portfolio and the natural and cultural resources programs. As Hawai‘i executive director, Lee oversees forest and marine conservation programs on five islands and a climate change research laboratory at Palmyra Atoll. She resides in the community of Waimanalo in windward O‘ahu and during her spare time enjoys serving on community organization boards, hula, hiking and traveling.

CHRIS BAILEY Wahiawā Value-Added Product Development Center Chris is the manager of a new 33,000-square-foot manufacturing and teaching facility aims to help entrepreneurs develop marketable food products. Chris understands the value of food, in part from growing up while his mother and aunt ran a Thai restaurant in Waipahu. And he spent time working in the industry in Portland while studying business at Lewis & Clark College, and after. He understands the impact that is made when more value is added to the food that Hawai‘i’s farmers produce. The Center had education for entrepreneurs, assists farmers when their crops are abundant or don't meet the criteria for distribution. Additionally, per Chris, the center includes equipment for manufacturing that startups otherwise could not easily access. This also includes food-processing and packaging spaces, refrigerated storage and a high-pressure processing system that preserves taste and color while creating products with longer shelf lives. Join us to learn more about this facinating business and how it helps our community!
