Their Mission:  "Hawaii Fi-Do Service Dogs helps to build independence and quality of life for children and adults with mobility disabilities in Hawaii by providing them with quality trained assistance dogs by sharing awareness of service dogs to the community."

Founded in 1998, Hawaiʻi Fi-Do Service Dogs believes the right dog can change everything. For more than 25 years, this Hawaiʻi-based nonprofit has trained and placed service dogs with individuals who have physical disabilities, restoring independence, confidence, and dignity through the bond between people and dogs.

Each dog is carefully selected, raised by volunteer puppy raisers, and professionally trained to perform essential tasks such as mobility support, item retrieval, balance assistance, and anxiety interruption. These dogs don’t just help, they give their partners independence.

That impact is deeply personal for Hawaiʻi Fi-Do Board President Dara Fukuhara. Living with a severe mobility disability, Dara first supported the organization in the early 2000s through her public relations and marketing work. As her health declined, her role deepened. She joined the board, raised one of Hawaiʻi Fi-Do’s breeder dogs, and eventually faced the need for a service dog herself. Twenty years later, the right match arrived: QT. After two years of training, QT graduated, giving Dara daily security, practical support, and peace of mind. QT now assists with tasks Dara can no longer manage and is learning how to get help in an emergency.

Beyond service dog placements, Hawaiʻi Fi-Do’s therapy and outreach programs bring comfort to children affected by trauma, seniors in care homes, and students in local schools, touching hundreds of lives across Hawaiʻi each year.

Committed to access and equity, Hawaiʻi Fi-Do removes financial barriers so life-changing support reaches those who need it most. With the help of donors and volunteers, the organization continues building a more compassionate Hawaiʻi, one service dog at a time.

Addressing homelessness and creating more affordable housing are top priorities for the former business executive. So is having the right people and strategies in place. 

About Anton: 

Anton’s father was in the U.S. Navy and in the battle of Pearl Harbor on the USS Preble.  His mother is Hawaiian and was a nurse at Queen’s.  He attended the University of Maryland with a degree in Criminology.  He and his wife Julie have five children and two grandchildren. They reside in Hawai’I Kai.  Their son recently married a wonderful woman with three children. 

Anton has consulted in Leadership Management and Strategic Planning.  He likes to fly fish, deep sea fishing, basketball, hiking and running.

MAYOR RICK BLANGIARDI

Talk Story

Join us for lunch with guest speaker Mayor Rick Blangiardi.  This will be a talk story with the Mayor.  We will get updated on what's going on and can ask questions.  

Rick Blangiardi has led a life of uncompromising service to Hawaii, his colleagues and especially his family. Elected as the 15th Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu, he is now leading the nearly one million people of the eleventh largest municipality in the country.

Blangiardi took office January 2, 2021 and immediately went to work, hiring more than 40 highly accomplished and experienced professionals to address the short and long term challenges facing the City.

Prior to being elected Mayor Blangiardi led a distinguished and award winning career as a media executive that spanned more than four decades.

Rick practices what he preaches, he has an extensive resume of involvement with Hawaii’s leading non-profit organizations, educational institutions, and youth development programs.

Forever a coach, Blangiardi began his football coaching career at the University of Connecticut and then went on to the University of Hawaii to become the Defensive Coordinator/Associate Head Football Coach.

In a historic landslide victory, Blangiardi won re-election by capturing nearly 80% of the vote in the primary, reaffirming the overwhelming support and trust of Oahu's residents in his leadership.

Humbled and proud of his family, Rick lives in Honolulu with his wife Karen Chang. He has three children; Matt, Ryan and Laura and six grandchildren.

ROBERT "BOB" MANN

Forensic Anthropologist

Serial Killers, Skeletons, and Cemeteries: Forensic Anthropology Around the World

Robert Mann is a prominent forensic anthropologist known for his significant contributions to the field, particularly in identifying human remains and training forensic professionals in Thailand. 

Bob will give an introduction and overview of the techniquies and methods used in forensice anthropology as they apply to helping solve police and medical examiner cases around the world.  He will highlight some of the more famous cases that he has worked on in his 45-year career, including Jeffrey Dahmer's first victim, 9/11, cemetery excavations in Thailand and elsewhere, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. 

A professor at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa and the founding Director of the Central Idetification Laboratory's Forensic Science Academy, he has a rich background in forensice anthropology, having previoulsy served as the Assistant Morgue Director at the University of Tennessee School of medicine and as an anthropologist at the Smithsonian Institution. Bob has examined over 4,000 human skeletons from various contexts, including ancient and modern remains.

Kaialiʻi Kahele was elected trustee for Hawaiʻi Island in 2024 and elected OHA board chair the same year. Trustee Kahele is originally from Miloliʻi in South Kona. He is a graduate of Hilo High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in education from UH Mānoa while playing on the UH Rainbow Warriors men’s volleyball team. He also has a master’s degree in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College.

Kahele is a combat veteran, pilot, and commissioned officer in the Hawaiʻi Air National Guard, U.S. Air Force. He is also a commercial pilot for Hawaiian Airlines.

In 2016, Gov. David Ige appointed him to the Hawaiʻi State Senate for District 1 following the unexpected passing of his father, the late Sen. Gil Kahele. During his tenure as a state senator, Kahele served as the majority whip, majority floor leader, and chair for the committees on Higher Education and Water and Land. In 2020, he was elected to represent Hawaiʻi’s 2nd Congressional District in Washington, D.C., in the 117th Congress.

Roger Morton is the Director for the City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Transportation Services (DTS). Mr. Morton is a transportation professional whose Hawaii career spans over 50 years. Prior to his appointment as DTS Director, Mr. Morton spent 15 years as President and General Manager of O‘ahu Transit Services, Inc., the operator of Honolulu’s TheBus and Handi-Van system.  Mr. Morton graduated from Kalani High School in Honolulu. He holds an undergraduate degree in Economics and a graduate degree in Community and Regional Planning. He serves on the boards of the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART), the Oahu Metropolitan Planning Organization (OMPO) , the Waikiki Transportation Management Association and the American Public Transportation Association (APTA).
