2025.06.24 Hybrid Lunch Meeting - Lisa Paulson
Jun. 24, 2025 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Lisa Paulson
CEO of Maui Food Bank and The Hawaii Tourism Authority
Farm to Family Bill and other Updates

Lisa Paulson’s extensive experience in Hawaiʻi’s tourism, hospitality and nonprofit sectors makes her an exceptional candidate for the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority (HTA). Over three decades on Maui, she has demonstrated unparalleled leadership, particularly as the executive director of the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association, where she effectively bridged the gap between the visitor industry and the community. Her expertise in lobbying and stakeholder engagement has driven key initiatives, including securing funding for hospitality education and advocating for balanced regulations to benefit Maui’s economy and environment. Her deep understanding of tourism’s role in Hawaiʻi’s economy, combined with her ability to foster relationships with diverse stakeholders, positions her as a visionary leader who can advance HTA’s mission.
Paulson’s track record of community-focused leadership aligns with HTA’s goals of promoting sustainable tourism and preserving Hawaiʻi’s cultural and natural resources. As Maui’s Chief Executive Officer of the Food Bank and her previous roles with Maui County and Maui Health, she has consistently prioritized community well-being, resource preservation, and long-term planning. Notably, her role in shaping Maui’s Destination Management Plan showcases her strategic insight into balancing tourism growth with environmental stewardship and cultural respect. Her leadership during emergencies, such as her service at the Maui County Emergency Operations Center, further underscores her crisis management skills—essential for navigating the evolving challenges of Hawaiʻi’s tourism landscape.
Appointing Lisa Paulson to HTA brings a wealth of expertise, a strong commitment to community partnership, and a proven ability to navigate the complexities of Hawaiʻi’s tourism industry. Her dedication to education, sustainable practices, and community engagement demonstrates her alignment with HTA’s core values. With her guidance, HTA can foster a more harmonious relationship between Hawaiʻi’s visitors, residents, and natural resources, ensuring the industry’s prosperity while protecting the essence of what makes Hawaiʻi unique.

CAMILLE NELSON

Dean of the William S. Richardson School of Law
University of Hawaii

Reimagining Legal Education: Empowering Law Students as Leaders for a More Just & Complex Society

Dean Nelson will present key trends and observations that are especially significant for students of the law navigating the post-pandemic landscape and its new challenges. While the pandemic years brought unprecedented difficulties, they have also fortified us to better serve a society where law, legal questions, and tech innovation hold increasing prominence. By envisioning legal education as a vital space for developing lawyers as societal leaders, we unlock opportunities to reimagine the path forward in an increasingly complex era.

Dean Camille Nelson brings a wealth of experience to her role. Prior to her appointment as Dean of the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in 2020, she served as Dean of two law schools – American University Washington College of Law in Washington, D.C., and Suffolk University Law School in Boston, Massachusetts. She has also held faculty positions at several other law schools, including Hofstra University, Washington University, and Saint Louis University School of Law, where she was recognized as Professor of the Year and with a university Faculty Excellence Award. Over the last two decades, Dean Nelson has taught Criminal Law, Torts, and Criminal Procedure at Richardson Law as a visiting professor. Before entering academia, Dean Nelson was a litigator in Toronto and clerked at the Supreme Court of Canada.

Dean Nelson’s career has been highlighted by excellent teaching, impactful scholarship, and awards for her service and leadership, including the Paul Robeson Award from Columbia Law School's Black Law Students Association and with a Top Woman in Higher Education Award by Diverse magazine. She was also recently selected as a recipient of the 2025 Deborah L. Rhode Award, presented by the Association of American Law Schools (AALS).

Since her arrival at Richardson, Dean Nelson has initiated several innovative programs. These include the Island Leadership Lab, an immersive leadership experience grounded in a curriculum specifically designed to prepare the next generation of leaders for success; the Business Bootcamp, a program that equips law students with essential financial and business skills; and an Innovator in Residence program to bolster the technological fluency of the law school community. Additionally, Dean Nelson launched the Hawaiʻi Online JD program to expand access to legal education, including across neighboring islands and the larger Pacific Region. She has also been instrumental in enhancing support for student bar passage and increasing scholarships for Richardson Law students.

RCOH Lunch Meeting - Jennifer Ablan
Oct. 14, 2025 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
JENNIFER ABLAN
Editor-in-Chief, Hawaii Business Magazine

The U.S. Economy Under Trump: Policies, Outcomes, and Lessons

Few presidencies have sparked as much debate over economic policy as Donald Trump’s. Supporters credit him with historic tax reform, deregulation, and record-low unemployment before the pandemic. Critics argue his trade wars, ballooning deficits, and uneven gains exposed deep structural weaknesses. This session will explore the Trump economy—its short-term effects, long-term consequences, and what it reveals about America’s economic resilience. Attendees will gain insight into how Trump’s policies reshaped business, investment, and the labor market, and what lessons they hold for the nation’s economic future.

Jennifer Ablan is the Editor-in-Chief of Hawaii Business Magazine. She returns home to Oahu after 28 years in New York City covering finance and business news as both a reporter and editor. Most recently, she served as Editor-in-Chief of Pensions & Investments. Prior to that, she was U.S. Assistant Managing Editor at the Financial Times, where she helped drive editorial expansion across the United States.

Earlier in her career, Ablan spent a decade at Reuters as U.S. Investments Editor, leading a team focused on asset management and “big money” coverage. She also held positions at Barron’s and Dow Jones Newswires, consistently specializing in money management and investing.

Widely known across Wall Street for breaking major stories, Ablan has interviewed many of the world’s most influential investors, including billionaire activist Carl Icahn, DoubleLine’s “Bond King” Jeffrey Gundlach, Pimco’s Dan Ivascyn, Berkshire Hathaway’s Warren Buffett, Bridgewater’s Greg Jensen and Cathie Wood of Ark Invest, which invests in Bitcoin.

A proud graduate of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, Ablan received the 2011 Rising Star award from the Women’s Bond Club and was named one of Business Insider’s “125 most important finance people you have to follow” on Twitter.

RCOH Lunch Mtg - Matt Elliott
Oct. 21, 2025 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Matt Elliott

Director of Athletics, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa

UH Athletics. Our Team. Hawai'i's Team.

Matt Elliott was unanimously appointed by the University of Hawaiʻi Board of Regents as the 26th Director of Athletics at UH Mānoa. He officially began his role on June 30, 2025, following a national search with over 110 applicants. UH President Wendy Hensel selected him for his leadership, strategic vision, and deep ties to Hawaiʻi.

Elliott brings over a decade of Division I athletics administration experience, including 13 years at UCLA. As Chief Strategy Officer, he led UCLA’s transition from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten and crafted a five-year strategic plan. He also played a key role in negotiating a $280 million apparel deal, the largest in college athletics history. His prior roles included overseeing sports operations, legal affairs, NIL policy, compliance, and athletic performance.

From 2024 until his UH appointment, Elliott served as Senior Director of Policy and Public Affairs at the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation, working closely with state leaders on advocacy and legislative strategy.

Originally from Framingham, Massachusetts, Elliott earned his BA from Amherst College, where he competed in varsity crew, and a JD with honors from Northwestern University School of Law. He moved to Hawaiʻi 2005 to clerk for U.S. District Court Judge Alan C. Kay, where he met his wife Allison, a Punahou School and Occidental College graduate. Elliott and his family returned to Hawaiʻi in 2022

Elliott assumes leadership at a pivotal time for UH Athletics, facing challenges such as NIL disparities, the House v. NCAA settlement, and the lack of a permanent Division I stadium. He is committed to building a department grounded in integrity, excellence, and student-athlete experience, saying:

“Together we will create the best possible student-athlete experience and set our teams up to win.”
